Story
When our son Arthur was just 3 weeks old, our world was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis.
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic condition that affects the movement of salt and water in and out of cells. People with CF experience a build-up of thick sticky mucus in the lungs, digestive system and other organs, causing a wide range of challenging symptoms affecting the entire body.
For Arthur this means that he is more susceptible to chest infections due to bacteria getting trapped in the thick sticky mucus in his lungs. Everyday our life revolves around Arthur’s treatments. This includes daily physiotherapy, where we use techniques to dislodge mucus from his tiny lungs. It also affects his pancreas, meaning he cannot digest his own food without special pancreatic enzymes before every meal. On top of this Arthur takes several other different medicines, it’s a constant effort to keep him as healthy as possible.
Something as simple as a common cold, which is for many of us a minor inconvenience, can be a major threat to Arthur’s health. It can quickly lead to a serious chest infection and require a hospital stay a fear that is always in the back of my mind.
When the training runs get tough, I think about the courage and resilience Arthur shows every day battling this condition and it gives me the strength to keep going.
Witnessing these daily challenges is why we are so passionate about supporting The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. They fund vital research, improve care, speak out and race towards effective treatments for all. The research they fund is not just about managing the condition but about the goal of finding a cure. Allowing everyone with cystic fibrosis to live a life unlimited.
Running a half marathon is a huge mental and physical challenge for me, but it pales in comparison to the challenges Arthur faces every day and I will be thinking of him with every step I take. I am running this race to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, and I would be incredibly grateful for any donations you can give. Your support will help fund vital research and give children like Arthur a brighter future.
