Story
In April 2026, I will be running the London Marathon in support of Sue Ryder, a cause very close to my heart.
As you may know, my husband Max sadly passed away from cancer in November 2024. Max was a man that left an imprint wherever he went; a windup and full of wit, with the biggest heart and the kindest soul. Words will never be able to sum up the incredible person he was.
From the time of Max’s diagnosis, our world was turned upside down and was a constant rollercoaster of chemotherapy, hospital visits and uncertainty. During this period, the breaks we got from the relentless nature of cancer, its treatments and the emotional toll this takes were few and far between. Sue Ryder provided both Max and I with some of the most peaceful, supportive and stress-free days that allowed us to spend enjoyable and precious time together (with Maple)! The support of staff at Sue Ryder, and what is offered at Leckhampton Court Hospice through their palliative care, is beyond what we ever expected and has had a lasting impact on myself and the memories that I carry with me of Max.
I will be honest that when hearing the words palliative care and hospice, our preconceptions were naively not particularly positive. I hope that alongside fundraising, I can also spread awareness and knowledge of Sue Ryder’s work and what their hospice offers. I hope that no one need ever be in the position of having to consider hospice or palliative care, but Sue Ryder really is an incredible place of support for those that need it.
During his illness, Max showed strength I can’t comprehend to this day. So, although running is not my forte (Max would attest to this), I will be aiming to channel just a portion of Max’s determination, resilience and strength; with every step made in honour of him and those who can’t! This is for everyone who has, or will, ever need to look for support with a terminal illness, including cancer.
I would love your support however that looks - please do share or donate, no matter the amount. Any offers of company in the long months of training would also be very welcome!
And a huge thank you, to every single person, and all those who have ever supported Max or I throughout this journey. ❤️
Sue Ryder:
Sue Ryder supports people through the most difficult times of their lives. Whether that’s a terminal illness or the loss of a loved one – they are there when it matters.
For over 65 years, doctors, nurses and carers have given people the compassion and expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can.
It will cost Sue Ryder around £48m to run healthcare services next year and they will need to raise £17.3m through donations or funds raised by incredible supporters like you. I only hope to make a small dent in this.
