Story
I am supporting Alzheimer’s research UK and have kept this page open as i continue to run events for them. I have already taken part in the Cardiff Half marathon back in October 2023 then a 10.5 mile 'Maverick dark Run’ in february 3rd 2024, a half marathon in WARSAW Poland on September 6th 2025 which took place during Alzheimers awareness month and now the Brighton 10km on Sunday 12th April 2026.
This charity is so close to my heart. My paternal Nan 'Beryl Brooker' spent the last 8 years of her life living in a care home with dementia, a little piece of my Nan seem to disappear every time I visited her. She was the best Nan in the world, and to watch her deteriorate and change from the person I had always known was truly heartbreaking. She was finally at peace on the 11th December 2019 age 91.
In the September of 2019 my wonderful mum received a Diagnosis of ‘A typical form of dementia in Alzheimers at the young age of 64 but had been symptomatic for 2 years. This news was devastating. Mum’s form is not hereditary and they believe caused by the trauma of losing her husband, ‘my Dad’ to cancer, he was only 56 years old and then being burgled in April 2017. Four months later we started to notice some changes. The traumas had started to shut down pathways in her brain. Mum is very aware of the things she is now unable to do, she is frightened and we are all terrified for this new unknown future. Her symptoms are getting worse which breaks my heart but I am so proud of her and how she battles on everyday. Mum is still living at home but Ben and I now alternate the mornings and we have a wonderful carer in the evenings. We have also had to sort carers for mum at the yard to enable her to keep her horse, she enjoys a plod around the lanes with her carer walking along on foot.
Some days the smallest of tasks are a real effort for mum, it’s truely heartbreaking.
Research is too late for mum but for my children’s generation it isn’t.
It is devastating that there is no medical cure. Dementia research is hugely underfunded - receiving 10 times less funding than other diseases. And yet the economic impact of dementia is greater than that of cancer and heart disease combined. The diseases which cause Dementia, such as Alzheimer’s are physical diseases. With research and funding, there is NO reason why they cannot be slowed, and eventually cured. YOU can help! By sponsoring me, even just £1 or the price of a cup of coffee, your money can make a huge difference in aiding research in this incredibly important fight.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
