3 Peaks Challenge · 21 April 2023
In 2020, my brilliant dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia.
Dad was always the funniest, most opinionated (and stubborn!) person in any room. Dementia has stolen these traits, replacing them with worsening anxiety and confusion as the disease continues to damage his brain, impacting his ability to think, behave and feel.
As there is no cure for dementia, my dad won't be getting any better. Each day my family and I lose a little bit more of the dad that we’ve always known and loved.
At times it’s hard to know where to turn when something difficult happens with dad, or when we notice a seismic, worsening shift in his symptoms. As a family caring for dad, dementia can feel like it’s also taking over your whole life, especially for my wonderful mum who is dad's full-time carer.
I’m raising money for Alzheimer’s Society because of the support they provide to people with dementia, their carers, and their families in living with this disease. Any donations are so gratefully appreciated and will make an invaluable difference to the charity.
What are we doing?
4 friends and I are tackling the National Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the highest mountains of England (Scafell Pike), Scotland (Ben Nevis) and Wales (Snowdon) and trekking over 42km. Oh, and driving a distance of 1,227 miles in our little camper van!
