Letzten Sommer war ich 6 Wochen in Calais und habe mit CollectiveAid Geflüchtete unterstützt. Seitdem lässt mich das Thema nicht mehr los.

Bei meiner Arbeit dort habe ich Menschen kennengelernt, die genauso alt waren wie ich. Trotzdem hätte unsere Situation nicht unterschiedlicher sein können. Ich hatte gerade mein Abi fertig und stand vor tausend offenen Türen. Und die Menschen mir gegenüber hatten wenig mehr als ihre Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben. Alles nur, weil wir in einem anderen Land geboren sind.

Bei meiner Arbeit dort habe ich Wut erlebt auf Deutschland, auf Frankreich, auf die EU. Darauf, dass Menschenrechte gepredigt und dann mit Füßen getreten werden. Was in Calais passiert, ist der Inbegriff der europäischen Abschottungspolitik.

Deshalb werde ich (wie letztes Jahr) mit dem Team in Calais 65km laufen. Die Strecke steht metaphorisch für die 65km Frontex-Zaun, die Calais umgeben und tagtäglich an die Militarisierung der europäischen Grenzen erinnert.

Der Walk ist ein Fundraising Event für CollectiveAid. CollectiveAid betreibt in Calais ein WASH center, wo Menschen ihre Klamotten waschen und eine Pause machen können. So können Klamotten länger verwendet werden anstatt sie, wie wenn keine Waschmöglichkeit verfügbar ist nötig, wegzuwerfen. CollectiveAid verschafft Geflüchteten so nicht nur einen Zugang zu Wasser sondern erlaubt auch eine nachhaltigere Nutzung der Ressourcen, die vorhanden sind. Zudem dient der WASH als Community Space; es gibt Kunstworkshops, Sprachunterricht und Spiele. Am wichtigsten ist uns, dass die Menschen sich im WASH wohlfühlen und sich mal entspnnen können. Außerdem verteilt CollectiveAid Zelte, meist der einzige Schutz für die Geflüchteten, die auf der Straße leben.

Obwohl ich weiß, dass die meisten von euch Studierende sind, die nicht unbedingt große Geldmengen abzugeben haben, bitte ich euch etwas zu geben, falls ihr könnt. Alles hilft :) 12 Euro bspw. sind genug für ein Zelt für zwei Personen.

Last summer I spent 6 weeks in Calais and worked with CollectiveAid to support people on the move on the ground. Ever since I haven't stopped thinking about it.

Working there I met people who were just the same age as me and still, we couldn't have been in a more different situation. I had just finished highschool, doing a gapyear, thousand doors open in front of me. And the people I talked to didn't have much more than hope for a better life. All because we had been born in different countries.

I saw a lot of anger at France, Germany, the EU when I was there. Anger at the hypocrisy of preaching human rights and then trampling right over them. What's happening in Calais is the embodiment of Fortress Europe.

For that reason I will be walking 65km with CollectiveAid (like I did last year). The distance is a metaphor for the 65km of Frontex fence surrounding Calais, a daily reminder of the militarisation of European borders.

The walk is a fundraising event for CollectiveAid. CollectiveAid runs a WASH center in Calais, where people can do their laundry and take a break. This allows for clothes to be used longer instead of having to be thrown out, which is what happens when there is no possibility to wash them. The WASH also functions as a community center; there are art workshops, language classes and games on offer. Most importantly we try to make people feel comfortable and give them a space where they can relax. CollectiveAid also distributes tents to those in need. Usually the tents are the only kind of shelter the people sleeping rough in Calais have.

I know that many of you are students and don't have much to give, but if you can (even if it's just a little) please consider doing so. Everything helps! 12 Euro for example are enough to supply a two-person tent.
