In memory of Darren Howard
The Light the Lakes event sees teams of police officers, staff, retired officers and police friends light up the famous Wainwright fells of Cumbria at 3am in memory of friends and colleagues who have died.

Story

20 years ago Darren and I would regularly go camping and walking in The Lake District and Scarfell Pike was one of our faves. Darren would always end up carrying our Beagle the last stretch as Fred was too chunky and lazy to be bothered to make it to the top and there was no way we weren’t making it to top!!

Our daughter and her 3 siblings have been cruely left without Darrens presence in their lives. Darren was Pippa's hero. She adored her dad and he adored her. Darren fought courageously for nearly 2 yrs and was so brave even though he was in so much pain. I want to hike up Scarfell for him and set of his flare in honour of what an amazing person and Police officer he truly was. He was loved by so many and deserves to shine bright in the sky. Please help me raise my target of £500 to support Pippa, Jacob, Sophie, Chloe and all the police survivor's. Thank you xxx

Fundraising for Care of Police Survivors (COPS).

Light the Lakes has become an established event in the climber's diary where Police Officers, colleagues and friends climb the 214 Wainwright peaks in the Lake District to raise money to support COPS (Care of Police Survivors).

COPS provides peer support, counselling, mental well-being and respite services to help surviving family members of police officers and staff who have died on duty rebuild their lives. They work with hundreds of families from across the UK – all of their services are provided free of charge and for as along as they are needed.

The vision has always been to cover all 214 Wainwright fells with the light of flares in honour of our fallen officers. Knowing that each flare is in honour of those who have lost their life is an incredibly special and moving experience.

This year is the sixth for Team Up and we will be hiking up Scafell Pike and wild camping along the way.

Among those we will be remembering are:

PC Dale Johnson

PC Andy Cochran

PS Matt Ratana

PS Graham Saville

PC Ashleigh Metcalf

PC Ty Jones

PS Matt Hinton

DC Ansah Ossei-Owusu

PC Damien ‘Minty’ Harris

PC Chris Donovan

PS Paul Purdy
