Leanne's fundraiser for Teenage Cancer Trust

Leanne Charnley is raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust

Team: Team fundraising for The Candlelighters Trust and Candlelighters Charities

Christmas Charity Tractor Run · 7 December 2025

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young cancer patients aged 13-24. We fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In May 2024, our son, aged 15, was diagnosed with a type of Lymphoma. He was admitted to Ward 33 at Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.

Ward 33 is funded by The Teenage Cancer Trust and is specifically for patients aged 13-18. On the ward, they fund a day room including games consoles, a TV and big sofa. They also fund bedside TV's, DVD players, parent facilities, board games and activities. They fund a nurse consultant and a youth support coordinator to help support patients and their families going through some of the hardest times in their lives. We spent many weeks here whilst our son was receiving his treatment, away from home and from our other children. We found these invaluable facilities provided a brief distraction from the clinical hospital environment and a home like area we could go to, as we tried to process this devastating situation as a family. Our son, who was used to being outdoors and active, found staying isolated on the unit very difficult. The youth support coordinator organised games and activities to keep him positive and busy. She spoke to him like a person and not as a cancer patient. After treatment, The Teenage Cancer Trust funds group meetings, days out and group activities to support young people regain their independence and connect with others who have been through similar diagnoses.

The Teenage Cancer Trust rely on charitable donations and could not fund the unit at LGI or others around the country without them. Teenagers would have to have their cancer treatment on the main children’s ward alongside much younger children or on the main adult ward alongside much older adults. As a family we know what a negative impact this would have on patients and their families.

As we live in a rural area and have strong links with the farming community, we thought it would be fitting to raise money for The Teenage Cancer Trust and Candlelighters by holding a Christmas Tractor Run. We would love people to come and watch the run and there will be opportunities to make donations on the day. But if you can't make it or want to give any amount, however big or small, via Just Giving, we would be extremely grateful.

Our son finished his treatment and is now in remission. This year he has passed his tractor test and his GCSEs and is very much looking towards the future.
