I’m fundraising for Maternal Mental Health Alliance because I was one in five of new mums who experience mental illness in the perinatal period. Until this point I had always been lucky and have never experienced any mental illness and had very little understanding of it. What I didn’t know then was that 74% of new mums will have no prior history of mental illness meaning I was more likely to become unwell from perinatal mental illness than many of the physical illnesses everyone had warned me about. The stigma surrounding perinatal mental illness is huge and reaching out can feel impossible. It’s hard to feel so low at a time when society expects you to feel at your happiness.

I’m proud to be a Maternal Mental Health Alliance champion, raising awareness of perinatal mental illness and giving hope to those struggling that it isn’t forever and they will recover. I’m incredibly grateful that my life was saved by the amazing perinatal services we have and the work the Maternal Mental Health Alliance has done in campaigning for these services is phenomenal.
