Story

As most of you know my amazing son was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Aneamia in January 2024 (bone marrow failure). Being told my boy had a rare life threatening condition and was very unwell is a nightmare I will never forget. The next few months was a blur of countless blood & platelet transfusions, hospital admissions for IV antibiotics and the insertion of a central line amongst many other scans/tests to keep him alive. Ellis spent the majority of 2024 at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The next step was a stem cell transplant. We were extremely fortunate to find out that his amazing sister, Summer, was a full match so the process of a transplant began.

In the lead up to transplant Ellis became very unwell with a fungal lung infection, but as with everything he has faced, he was a fighter and the transplant went ahead. As part of the transplant journey Ellis underwent chemotherapy and immunosuppressants to get his body ready for the new cells.

We are now coming up to 1 year post transplant on 19th April 2025. There’s been bumps in the road as expected and we are learning to live a new ‘normal’ life. The process is still ongoing but the future is bright and that’s all thanks to the amazing life saving treatment and his amazing sister.

I would love to give back to such an amazing charity, a charity that isn’t as well known as some of the big charities.

Aplastic Anaemia is a rare life-threatening auto-immune disease that stops the bone marrow from producing blood. The Aplastic Anaemia Trust is the only charity in the UK focused on aplastic anaemia. They fund research to improve treatment, provide expert information, and work tirelessly, at grassroots level, to support every aplastic anaemia patient and their loved ones. They bring failed bone marrow back to life!
