What Have I Signed Up For? – My London Marathon Journey for Barnardo’s
So… I’ve done something bold. Some might say brave. Others might say completely bonkers. I’ve signed up to run the London Marathon. Yes, THE London Marathon. That’s 26.2 miles (42.2 kilometres) of sweat, tears, and questionable fashion choices in lycra.
Honestly, I still can’t believe I’m doing this. One minute I was enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, the next I was clicking “Register” and wondering if I’d accidentally joined a cult of overly enthusiastic joggers. What have I signed up for?!
But here’s the thing: I’m doing this for Barnardo’s, a charity that supports vulnerable children across the UK. Their work is life-changing, and if I can help even a little by dragging myself across London in running shoes, then it’s absolutely worth it. It’s our workplace charity partner—and I’m proud to be putting my legs (and dignity) on the line for such a meaningful mission.
Training has been… let’s say “character-building.” I’ve discovered muscles I didn’t know existed and developed a deep emotional bond with my foam roller. I’ve run in the rain, the baking sun (hot enough to cook a chicken), the wind, and once while being smacked in the head by a bird (yes, really). I now plan my routes based on the availability of pubs, public toilets, and McDonald’s—just in case. Because when you’re in your 40s, everything creaks, and the fear of being caught short is very real.
The early mornings, the late-night runs, the constant worry about injuries—and let’s not forget the fundraising target—all add up. But every step brings me closer to the finish line, and more importantly, closer to helping Barnardo’s make a real difference.
Now, I need your help. Not with the birds (we’ve made peace), but with the fundraising. Every donation—big or small—is a massive boost. It’s like a virtual high-five that says, “You’ve got this!”
I know not everyone wants to run a marathon (and honestly, who could blame you?). So I’m doing the hard bit—so you don’t have to. All I ask is that you dig deep, support a great cause, and help me turn “What have I signed up for?” into “I can’t believe I did it!”
And when I finally cross that finish line? I’ll be celebrating with a long nap, a big fat burger, and a well-earned pint.
Thank you for your support—and for believing in me, even when my legs don’t.
