Story
OOMOO is a project at the heart of Open Door Charity.
For the past 3 years OOMOO has reimagined the emotional wellbeing offer for local children looked after aged 10-18. We use a trauma-informed approach to 1:1 support and psycho-educational weekly activities, to help our members build confidence, increase feelings of value, make life-long friendships and have positive transitions into adulthood.
OOMOO members face a range of complex needs and require a level of open-ended, bespoke support that is totally unique and adapted to them. It provides consistently and builds a sense of belonging for members. Valuing trust, kindness and human connection as key tools to change lives.
A trip to Alton Towers has been on the young peoples ‘light bulbs’ session ideas since the first weekend OOMOO opened in 2021. Funding is very tight for the project and in many cases restricted so we have not to date been able to offer this, so we are going to fundraise to make this happen.
All OOMOO activities are delivered through a psycho-educational lens and this trip will be the same, creating lifelong memories and experiences which in many cases are not available ordinarily for many of our young members.
We have built an evidence base that non-clinical, warm and welcoming activities like this help to break down barriers and stigma within the care system, improve symptoms of low mood and anxiety and build peer- to-peer connections with other care-experienced young people.
Funds raised will pay the full cost of the tickets, lunch and coach travel for the day.
Any support greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
