Story

In memory of my Grandad, Ken - This September, I’ll be running the Great North Run 2026 in support of Spinal Research.

In 1967, an accident changed his life forever, leaving him a quadriplegic. From that moment on, everyday things most of us take for granted — walking, independence, even the simplest daily tasks — were no longer possible.

But despite that, Ken never lost his kindness.

I was only 15 when he passed away, but his influence has stayed with me ever since. His resilience, his strength, and the way he carried himself through life helped shape the person I am today.

That’s why this isn’t just another run.

I’ve supported Spinal Research before, but this time I wanted to do something that truly honours his memory — something that pushes me further. So I’m taking on 13.1 miles, a much bigger challenge than the 5km I ran previously.

Over the next 5 months, I’ll be training with the goal of finishing in under 2 hours. There’ll be tough days and moments where I’ll want to stop — but when that happens, I’ll think of Ken, and everything he faced with strength and dignity.

Spinal Research is working towards life-changing treatments for spinal cord injuries. Every donation helps bring hope to people and families facing these challenges today.

If you’re able to support, I’d be incredibly grateful. And if not, sharing this would mean just as much.

Thank you ❤️
