Cycling Land's End to John O'Groats in memory of mum (Claire) · 25 May 2024

The Foundation’s mission is to ensure families facing the death a parent from cancer are offered professional emotional support, as well as raise awareness of the need for more research in the fight against non-smoking related lung cancers.

Story

Hello everyone,

Richard here! I'm reaching out to share a story that's close to my heart and to invite you to join me on an incredible journey.

On October 29th, 2019, my world changed forever. That was the day I said goodbye to my mum, Claire, almost a year to the day after receiving a terminal lung cancer diagnosis. Losing her was the hardest thing I've ever had to face, and not a day goes by that I don't miss her. The sense of loss is especially acute now that I have two children of my own (two boys - Hugo and Frank) who are growing up without their grandmother.

After the initial diagnosis, I wanted to do something to make a difference and turn my sorrow into something good. One of my closest friends, Jack Horncastle, stepped forward to take on the challenge of riding the length of the UK - from Land's End to John O’Groats - in memorial of my mum. The plan was set to do the ride in May 2020 but – no prizes for guessing – that didn’t go ahead, as the COVID-19 pandemic fully scuppered our plans. Four (very) busy years later – as Jack has also had a little human in that time! – perhaps less prepared and certainly less fit, we are "ready" to get back in the saddle!

On Saturday, 25th May, we'll start our journey from Land's End, aiming to reach John O'Groats in Scotland by Sunday, 2nd June. Joining Jack and me for the full ride is Jack’s friend Ed Morris, who will be raising funds for the British Heart Foundation. My close friend David Schnabel will be cycling with us through the whole of Scotland (4 days, starting from Carlisle), and we'll have a few special guests joining us for a day along the way, including Jack's brother Ollie and my brother Dom.

This will be the challenge of a lifetime. This journey will see us cover an average of more than 110 miles per day, and will test us physically and mentally like never before. But we're ready for the challenge, especially knowing that we're riding for such an important cause...

We want to raise £5000 for the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

This incredible charity is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for non-smoking lung cancer research and supporting families facing the loss of a parent. Every penny we raise will make a difference, and with your support, I know we can smash our target.

Donating through JustGiving is safe, fast, and secure. Your contribution will go directly to the charity, making it the most efficient way to support our cause.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us. Your generosity means the world to us!

With love and gratitude,

Richard & Jack
