Story
14 years ago, we lost John Tranter, a colleague and dear friend. I had the privilege of sitting next to him for four years, learning the agency trade, and enjoying team beers. Reflecting on his life, both then and now, I'm struck by three of his defining qualities.
He lived in the moment. He embraced life fully, seizing every chance to connect with friends and pursue his passions. Just months before his passing he embarked on an adventure across South America on a moto taxi - crazy at the time.
He was kind and empathetic. Always had a nice word to say, conducted his work with great humour and humility. He brought a smile to the face of everyone he met.
He was a unifier of people. His presence, in any setting, was enthusiastic and high energy, joining in every joke and every story told. You could always rely on him to make a good time memorable.
In my mind, under tragic circumstances, his qualities were reflected in the outpouring of people paying their respects. And the way the agency community came together in his memory, going on to raise well over a hundred thousand pounds for Operation Smile in his name - changing the lives of thousands needing cleft surgery in the process.
At the heart of the fundraising efforts that the London Office Societies have put on is ‘Pride of London’ white collar boxing event. So this year, when the opportunity to participate came about, I decided to give it a crack - A challenge, absolutely. Fitness, for sure, but the thing that drove me to say yes was the opportunity to give a nod to the big lad, and be part this tradition that embodies the camaraderie of our agency community.
Fight night is 16th May at the O2 Indigo. I’ll be fighting for the West End, against the City. Fight pairings to be announced soon.
While I'm excited to support the chosen charities on the night, today, on the anniversary of his death, my focus is on continuing John's legacy and raising a little more for Operation Smile. It's a small gesture to honour a remarkable individual and bring more smiles to those in need. Here's to you, John.
