Story
Thanks for visiting our page. We're raising money for the British Heart Foundation and would be so grateful for your support. We (Lewis and Reuben) will be running the Edinburgh Marathon on the 25 May 2025 in memory of our friend Dillon Duguid.
On May 24, 2023, Dillon underwent open heart surgery to correct a ventricular septal defect (VSD), a condition discovered when he was 8 months old. VSD is a heart defect that causes a hole in the wall of the heart but can typically be repaired through open heart surgery. Dillon was a fit and healthy young man, and the procedure was preventative to ensure he wouldn't face any health issues later in life.
After the surgery, Dillon woke up the following morning and messaged his family to let them know he was ready for visitors and gave them a list of foods he wanted taken in. Tragically, only minutes before they could arrive, Dillon suffered a cardiac arrest due to an undetected complication that had arisen during the surgery. Despite being rushed into emergency surgery, the lack of oxygen to his brain caused irreversible damage. Dillon passed away on June 20, 2023, leaving his family and friends heartbroken.
On May 25, 2025, it will mark two years since Dillon was rushed into emergency surgery.
Dillon was 23 years old and our best friend. Together, we degenerated into giggling immature 12 year olds. Dillon's life's purpose was to throw us into hysterical laughing fits, but to also keep our blood pressure in the sky, and our feet on the ground - two tasks he excelled at. As his friends, our purpose was to give back in kind. All this ensured that we never really grew up. With Dillon we spent countless hours in painful fits of laughter, late nights 'debating' stupid and unimportant things, and years dragging each other through ups and downs.
To remember Dillon, we have decided to torture ourselves for 26.2 painful miles. Do we enjoy running? Debatable. Have we been training? Yes. Will we still suffer? Yes. Will there be horrendous and publicly available photos? If you're lucky. We might even have fun.
At the moment, this run and the fundraising is how we give back to Dillon. We are not researchers, scientists, or doctors, just two idiots with too much time and four working legs (probably an overestimate of Reuben's legs). We are looking to raise a minimum of £1,500.00 for the BHF so that as much as possible can be done to prevent what happened to Dillon from recurring. Hopefully we can raise more.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any donation would be greatly appreciated.
The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps so please give what you can to help us hit our target. Thanks!
