I am raising funds and awareness for the Gordon Highlanders Museum in Aberdeen.
I am challenging myself to complete the 18 mile Aberdeen Kiltwalk wearing early WW1 Gordon Highlanders marching order equipment and full service dress.
This includes 1908 pattern webbing loaded to 57lbs 2 1/2 ounces (26Kg) without rifle.
Soldiers in the First World War were expected to march 15 to 20 miles a day as a minimum in this kit. This is intended to demonstrate the most basic of hardships those men were expected to face.
It is important that as the First and Second World Wars pass from memory completely that we do not forget the sacrifices and bravery of our forefathers who won the rights that we enjoy today.
Roughly 50000 men from the North East of Scotland served in the Gordon Highlanders Regiment between 1914 -1918.
29000 of those men were casualties, of which 9000 died.
We will remember them.
"Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them."
Franklin D. Roosevelt 1941
