Jonathan Addenbrooke's fundraiser for Addison's Disease Self-Help Group

Jonathan Addenbrooke is raising money for Addison's Disease Self-Help Group

Jonathan’s Captains year - chosen charity · 1 January 2026

Founded in 1984, we're the UK charity for all affected by adrenal insufficiency, including Addison's disease. Every donation helps us raise awareness, improve adrenal crisis care and save lives. All donations go to our 'unrestricted' funds, to help us in this vital work.

Story

As Captain for 2026 at Lees Hall Golf Club, I’ve chosen the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group as my charity of the year. This cause holds a very personal place in my heart. My sister, Emma, was diagnosed with Addison’s nearly ten years ago, and while she manages the condition every single day, the journey hasn’t been easy.

By supporting this charity, I hope to raise awareness of this rare disease and to generate funds for an organisation that has offered invaluable support to Emma and many others living with Addison’s.

Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency are rare, potentially life-threatening endocrine conditions in which the adrenal glands stop working properly. This means the body can no longer produce enough essential steroid hormones, such as cortisol, which are vital for life.

The adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of the kidneys. Their main role is to produce these steroid hormones, which help the body function normally.

People with Addison’s disease or adrenal insufficiency require lifelong treatment with replacement steroid hormones. Medication is usually taken several times a day at carefully timed intervals. In addition, individuals must know how to administer an emergency hydrocortisone injection, which can be life-saving in the event of an adrenal crisis.

At the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group (ADSHG), we support everyone affected by Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency. Everything we do is driven by a bold vision:

"A world where Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency are recognised early and managed effectively so that anyone affected can live confidently and thrive."

With your help, we’re working to make that vision a reality.
