Story

Hello!

Over the last year and a bit, I have spent hours interviewing, chatting with and working with Scope to try and champion the voices of the disabled community.

Last year, I saw that Scope had released a new advert on Instagram and I was struck by how powerful it was and just how impactful it was. This led me to think about what I could do to try and raise awareness of all the issues the community faces on a day-to-day basis.

As a journalist, the number of opportunities to drive actual change and help support a community don’t come along as often as you might think. But since then, I have tried to help highlight the voices of the disabled community as much as I can and at every opportunity I have been given.

Since then, I’ve spoken to disabled people about their wonderful stories, from people living with ADHD and the worlds they have set up, to speaking to Hollywood actors about what we can all do to help raise awareness of the issues facing disabled people every day.

I have also worked closely with Scope to help organise the Disability Awards and ensure that the community has as much coverage as possible in the national press.

This felt even more poignant when, earlier this year, the government decided to put in motion changes that would see billions of pounds worth of disability benefits cut, impacting millions of disabled people in the UK.

I’ve seen firsthand how disabled people have fought to be accepted and recognised within their lives, and just how important it is to be an ally and champion of the community.

I’ve spoken to people who have changed their lives overnight to care for their loved ones, and I want to keep shouting as loudly as possible about these wonderful stories and what we all need to do.

I have loved all the work I’ve done with Scope so far and I want to continue championing it as much as I can, and I would love as many people to donate to my run but more than anything I want to raise money for an amazing charity doing fantastic work and so we can all try and keep fighting the good fight.

------

There are 16 million disabled people in the UK. That’s one in four of us. Life is harder when you’re disabled. You're twice as likely to be unemployed and the cost of living is higher by £1,095* each month.

Scope’s mission is for disabled people to have the same opportunities as everyone else.

We want a future that’s fair to disabled people, always.

All funds go directly towards supporting Scope’s vision of a world where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else. We campaign relentlessly to create a fairer society, while providing practical and emotional advice and support to disabled people and their families when it’s needed most.
