Story

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with Dementia.

I’ve spent the last 15 years involved in the care of people living with dementia. I’ve seen first hand the devastating impact the disease has on the individual and their loved ones. It’s been a honour and a privilege to play any small part in making their lives just that little bit more comfortable and their days a little brighter.

I started my career at 18 years old in a nursing home owned and lovingly managed by my best friend Emily’s mum, Anita. She’s dedicated her long career to nursing hundreds of people, including those living with all forms of dementia. Anita is now facing her own battle with this disease, having recently being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

I’m taking part in Trek26 alongside Emily for her mum and for all the incredible people I’ve had the privilege to care for, including their families.

My aim is to raise public awareness of the hidden health crisis of our generation.

Any money you can spare will go towards research, support services and campaigning.

* 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with dementia

* Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer

* A third of people living with dementia have not been diagnosed

* Targets to improve the diagnosis rate have been removed NHS Operational Planning Guidance 25-26. The Alzheimer’s Society is campaigning against this.
