OCHRE works to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer, a hard to treat, less survivable cancer. We fund research to support better outcomes. We work with health services and policy makers to improve understanding of the dangers of heartburn and the need for earlier diagnosis which can save lives.

Story

In September 2023 my amazing Grandad was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer, the whole family were shocked and devastated by this news, a retired farm worker who was active and loved to produce the vegetables that my nan cooked for him.

Grandad fought this awful disease with the help of Chemotherapy but sadly lost his battle in April of this year, he never complained about the pain he must have been in through it all, he was only sad when he was not able to join us for meals and drinks at the end.

I was so grateful that I had the opportunity to take some photos of Grandad with my Son who was born at the end of February.

A mountain of a man and a gentle giant, my grandad was always smiling and laughing. His family were his world, he loved spending time with his 2 daughters, 4 grandchildren and now his 3 great grandchildren. At his last chemo appointment, his final request was to be here long enough to see his two great grandsons, which he managed to do by a month.

Other than his family, my Grandad was a pillar of the farming community in Walkern, a village in Hertfordshire, where he had worked since he was 14, a true testimony was the standing room only at the Village church for his funeral.

My Grandad has left a massive hole in my life and I hope that completing this run to raise money for this worthwhile charity will help others with this awful disease.
