On Sunday 16th June 2024, I will be taking part in the Lakesman Triathlon (1.2 mile swim in Derwent Water, 56 mile bike round the lake district and then a 13.1 mile run round Keswick!). This is a personal challenge as someone who has not been able to swim properly or not having ridden a bike in years.

I have volunteered at the event and supported Andrew and friends each year, but I never thought I would actually take part….. well this is my year! And I’m going to do it!!!

If anyone is able and willing to support me on my journey to become a Lakesman, I am raising funds for People First…..

People First is an amazing charity that I have had the privilege of working at for the last 16 years.

People First run a whole range of different projects all about helping people to live the life they choose.

The project I am fundraising for is our self-advocacy groups…. These are facilitated group sessions for people with learning disabilities to come together, learn about their rights, gain peer support and develop skills to feel comfortable and confident to speak up for themselves.

We run four fortnightly groups across Cumbria and they are currently unfunded- we do them because it is the right thing to do!

This is vital work that really makes a huge difference by helping people to help themselves, safeguarding rights, promoting choice and breaking down barriers to inclusion.
