Story
On the 7th November I took part in the YMCA's 17th annual sleep-out to raise awareness (and dosh!) for homelessness. Approx 50 people, most of whom like myself, were doing it for the first time, gathered in St Modwen's graveyard in the centre of Burton for a night under the stars (and fireworks!). I was surprised to find that despite the rain, and low flying planes, I did actually get some sleep but come 4:30am, feeling like the filling in a soggy cardboard burrito, I admitted defeat. To my surprise everyone else was having the same idea and soon we were all inside the church enjoying a hot drink and then off home for some dry clothes and to continue with the weekend routine.
I was fortunate that the following week I had a few days of annual leave to take and headed off to my favourite place - the Peak District - for some rest, It was then that I really had a chance to reflect on my experience. As the rain and wind came in and I developed what I think is known as 'Man Flu' I thought about all those who spend day in day out trying to hide from the elements. They continually exist in damp clothing and I can understand why the average life-expectancy for someone on the streets is mid 40s.
I don't feel I have earnt any "Well Dones" for my one night but Thanks must go to those who work year round for the YMCA have these people have my full admiration and support. I can't thank enough those of you who have donated money and I hope to see you all again next year for the 18th Sleep Out
Best Wishes
Lisa
