Story
I am a colorectal surgeon in Nottingham with a special interest in surgery for IBD. I have been a casual runner for many years but have never done a marathon, I must have entered the ballot for the London marathon 6 or 7 times before I finally got a place this year.
Neil Smart was a uniquely special person who I feel privileged to have known as a mentor and a friend. He was a trustee and had been involved and supported the IA for a number of years (https://iasupport.org/professor-neil-smart-tribute/). When I found out a week after Neil's death that I had a place in the 2026 London marathon it seemed obvious to me to run in memory of Neil and in support of the IA. Neil would definitely not approve of running a marathon (he preferred walking and cycling!) but I'm sure he would approve of supporting IA who also support many of my patients.
