Story
My name is Lisa, together with my husband Jamie and 4 other veterans, we are taking part in the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge to raise money for The Addison's Disease Self Help Group. I am taking part in this challenge because my friend Hannah, was diagnosed with Addison's Disease in 2022.
Addison's Disease is a rare endocrine condition where the adrenal glands cease to function, meaning your body no longer produces enough of certain essential hormones. These are known as steroid hormones, there job is to keep the body functioning properly. With the right balance of medication people with Addison's can expect to have a normal life span. This medication replaces the hormones and must be taken multiple times per day whilst also being prepared to inject a liquid version in the event of an adrenal crisis.
In the UK Addison's Disease affects approximately 1 in 10,000 people, it is most common in people between the ages of 30-50, but can occur at any time.
