Liz's fundraiser for Walezi-caregivers Kenya

Liz Cameron is raising money for Walezi-caregivers Kenya
“Valais Triathlon Festival”
In collaboration with our partner called Walezi Foundation Kenya, our charity helps to develop self-help groups for caregivers of children and family members with disabilities in Kilifi County, Kenya. The self-help groups enable members to overcome isolation by supporting and encouraging each other to address the challenges of caregiving. Each self-help group participates in meetings designed to encourage income generation, peer support, community inclusion and access to health and education for all. Our charity gives funds to established groups enabling them to embark on money-making capital projects, e.g. buying tents, chairs and cooking pots for community hire; building a water tank for water selling; constructing market stalls for selling produce. Profits are then used to benefit the health, education and well-being of loved ones with disabilities, including paying school fees, buying medication and buying food. Some profits can also be ploughed back into the business to enable growth, increasing profits and further benefitting those with disabilities. The ultimate aim of our charity is for the self-help groups to operate independently, with members supporting each other and running a self-sustaining business and social enterprise.

Story

Hi and thanks for visiting my JustGiving page. Well, we did it! I said I wanted a challenge and it turned out to be just that! It was a super hot day and I was so glad when it was over. There was a great atmosphere at Sion which helped keep me going as did all your support. Eternally grateful.

I will be 70 this year and would like to raise money for Walezi Caregivers while facing a physical challenge - my first triathlon. Walezi was founded by my dear friends Karen and Joe and I know how much it means to them to receive any donations.

Walezi empowers Caregivers of children and family members with disabilities in Kilifi County in Kenya

We have children with disability. this is what binds us together. We work together, we talk together and laugh together

Many Caregivers struggle to cope with the demands of caring for someone with disablities in circumstances of limited income and scarce support. Through their active membership of community based self-help groups, the Caregivers support each other, work together and take control of their lives. This brings sustainable development for family income, the health education and social well being of the children and family members with disabilities, and to the local community.

The money Walezi raises provides capital for group livelihood projects such as: livestock rearing and agricultural farming; tents and equipment for community events; constructing water towers and bore holes; and setting up market stalls and community cafes. Donations of any amount are gratefully received and will be put to work in one of Walezi's Self Help Group livelihood projects.
