Liz's fundraiser for Cardiac Risk in the Young

Liz's Lands End to John O' Groats Self-supported Cycling Meander · 17 May 2025
Every week in the UK, at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people tragically lose their lives to undiagnosed cardiac conditions.
This is a heart-wrenching reality.
After my own "funny do" with all things cardiac last year, I realised that I might have had a lucky escape, but that some young people never get that chance. By helping me raise funds for "Cardiac Risk in the Young" (CRY), you are supporting a charity dedicated to reducing the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). With your generous donation, CRY collaborates with cardiologists and family doctors to establish best practices and provide appropriate screening facilities, ensuring that young peoples cardiac health is prioritized and protected.
On 17th May, me and my pannier-laden bike will be setting out on a Lands End to John O' Groats Self-supported Cycling Meander / Challenge / Bootcamp. Some days I'll be riding solo, other days I'll be accompanied by a cycling buddy, but either way, I'll be cycling approximately 1200 miles and climbing over 55,000 ft.
I've had so many happy adventures on my bike over the past seven years since I started cycling, but I think this journey will be memory-making. Many months of planning and training have already taken place, but I'm pretty sure this cycle is really going to test my resilience. Last year's health scare might have put me on an ebike, but please don't be fooled that I'll be having an easy ride - I'll be working really hard! Apart from the physical and mental challenge of the journey, I suspect I'll also encounter navigational hiccups, British weather, mechanical issues and Scottish midges!
Hopefully this personal cycling journey will not only help to raise awareness of sudden cardiac death in young people, but also to gather support for this vital cause. My target is to raise £1,000, which will directly contribute to saving young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions.
Your support can make a significant difference. Together, we can help ensure that fewer families experience the heartbreak of losing a loved one too soon. Visit www.c-r-y.org.uk to see how your contribution can help.
