York Against Cancer is a local charity helping local people affected by cancer. We provide care and support for patients and their families in York and North & East Yorkshire, fund pioneering cancer research and provide cancer awareness education and information. We'll get through this together.

We are running the York 10K on the 3rd August and raising money for York Against Cancer, a charity that is close to our hearts.

In July 2021, despite having never missed a cervical smear test, and having had no symptoms, Lizzie was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Fortunately the cancer was in the early stages and was treated via a radical hysterectomy at St James’s Hospital in Leeds. The surgery was considered a success with only a 92% chance that the cancer would return.

However in November 2022 during a routine check-up it was discovered that, despite the odds, the cancer had returned. Fortunately the cancer was still localised and considered curable. This time Lizzie needed to undergo 7 weeks of daily radiation treatment (Monday to Friday) plus 5 cycles of chemotherapy, again at St James’s in Leeds. The treatment started in January 2023. The treatment was tough, but Lizzie was tougher.

Following the treatment, Lizzie needed to wait 3 months for her body to heal so that she could be scanned to see if the treatment had been a success. On the 30th May 2023 Lizzie received her results and the fantastic news that there was no evidence of disease.

Lizzie continues to be cancer free and has regular scans and check ups with her consultant in Leeds. She does have side effects from her treatment. Side effects include: medical menopause, low bone density, fractures to her pelvis, and lymphoedema in her legs and hips. Lizzie wears compression tights every day to manage her lymphoedema. The lymphoedema can make running more challenging, but this hasn’t stopped Lizzie!

Lizzie and Darren want to raise money for York Against Cancer (YAC) because in October 2023 YAC enabled them to go on a mini break to Filey with their two young daughters Olivia and Harriet. This break was fully funded by donations to the charity. Lizzie and Darren are fundraising so that other families affected by cancer can also receive much needed respite.

Their target is to raise £200 and they are so grateful for all donations.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Lizzie & Darren 💜
