Redefining Our Industry, Building a Better Future

The UK construction industry needs almost 239,000 additional workers by 2030, yet women still represent fewer than 15% of the workforce. To address the skills shortage, we must continue to make construction a more attractive career destination for women and an aspirational career choice for girls. While our industry has changed significantly over the years, there is still more to do.

That is why LMG created Hard Hats and Open Minds.

Our Commitment: To demonstrate that construction is an industry where women are welcomed, respected and able to build successful careers. Through strong male allyship, visible leadership and zero tolerance of toxic behaviour, we want to inspire more women and girls to see construction as a profession they can feel proud to join.

Importantly, this is not at the expense of young men. Recent national debate, including Adolescence and documentaries by Gareth Southgate and Louis Theroux, has highlighted the urgent need for positive male role models. Construction has a unique opportunity to lead by example by demonstrating the values we want future generations to see, while providing rewarding career pathways and a positive future for young men.

On Tuesday 15 September, we will walk 10km through Central London to demonstrate our commitment to building a more respectful, inclusive and attractive industry.

The need for change is also underlined by the UK's epidemic of violence against women and girls (VAWG). That is why we are proud to walk alongside Killed Women, supporting its mission to help end VAWG and secure justice for bereaved families.
