The Long Way Roond – a Scottish motorcycle challenge

Si Taylor is raising money for Oldham Mountain Rescue Team

The Long Way Roond · 28 August 2025

It carries out search and rescue operations for people in difficulties in the Peak District National Park and beyond. It also helps the police, fire, and ambulance services with urban incidents throughout Greater Manchester whenever the team's specialist skills, equipment and manpower are necessary.

Story

Andy and Si are hoping to raise funds for Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and awareness for their colleagues in Scottish Mountain Rescue.

Using motorcycles, they’re attempting a journey to the bases of all twenty-four volunteer Scottish mountain rescue teams in just eight days. This includes visiting not just the Highlands, but several islands too – will they manage it?

The idea for the trip came initially from Nick Ray’s inspirational book, Strong Winds Are Forecast, an account of his sea kayaking journey to every RNLI lifeboat station in Scotland. Also providing motivation was Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s 2004 ‘Long Way Round’ motorcycle adventure – it seemed only right to substitute ’roond’ for ‘round’ as a nod to the Scottishness of this endeavour!

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary organisation at the Northern tip of the English Peak District whose objective is ‘to save life and alleviate distress, primarily in upland and mountain areas’ without cost or obligation.
