Abseiling the Cutty Sark (dressed as Santa) in aid of Re-engage

Santa Climb & Abseil Challenge · 29 October 2024
I know it's barely October, and just like the supermarkets I'm already talking about 'the big C'.. but hear me out!
Despite a very logical fear of heights, I'll be taking part in a festive challenge this month by abseiling the Cutty Sark dressed as Santa Claus, in aid of reducing loneliness among older people.
For many, Christmas is a time of joy and celebration. But for over 900,000 older people in the UK, Christmas Day is spent alone. 1.6 million find the day to be the hardest of the year, with many more facing increased isolation due to the cost-of-living crisis. Loneliness isn’t just a feeling – it has serious consequences for mental and physical health, including an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline.
The solution? The Christmas call companion service
Re-engage’s Christmas call companion service connects older people with friendly volunteers who make regular calls throughout the festive season. These conversations provide a vital lifeline of friendship, reducing feelings of loneliness and helping older people feel connected during what can be a difficult time of year.
Donations will go towards supporting Re-engage’s work which brings companionship and connection to those who need it most this Christmas Day and beyond.
