Story

The mission of Nelson’s Journey is to increase the self-esteem, self-belief, and wellbeing of bereaved children in Norfolk. They help families and wider society talk openly about death and bereavement, while giving children the tools to express and understand their emotions.

In 2023, my family experienced two devastating and unexpected losses. My children, Bobby, Charlie and Ellie lost their Nana at just 52 years old, and later that same year, their Grandad—my dad—passed away at 56 from a sudden and rare disease, meningococcal. The impact of these losses was immense, but for my children, it was especially unbearable. Bobby, in particular, had an incredible bond with his Grandad, and the grief hit him hard.

Nelson’s Journey was a lifeline for us during those early, painful months. They offered me guidance and support through phone calls, which helped me navigate my children’s grief. They also provided a Grief Connections Day, which I attended with Bobby. While the day was emotionally challenging, it gave me tools to support my children and process my own grief. For Bobby, the day was transformative—he felt safe to share his feelings and fears, and the activities brought him comfort. It even brought us closer together in our shared pain.

This is why I’m abseiling down a the Forum next month, March 15th—to raise funds for Nelson’s Journey and ensure they can continue their incredible work for families like mine. Your support will help them provide the same care and resources to other children navigating the unimaginable.
