Story
The “Get up, Get dressed, Get moving” project is based on a global movement called “EndPJparalysis” The aim of “EndPJparalysis” is: to value patients’ time and help more people to live the richest, fullest lives possible by reducing immobility, muscle deconditioning and dependency, whilst at the same time as protecting cognitive function, social interaction and dignity. This is an idea embraced by nurses, therapists and medical colleagues across the globe. This go fund me has been set up to raise funds to support this crucial project for our physical health wards at both St Margaret's Hospital Epping and Saffron Walden Community hospital.
The project aims to introduce four elements/changes:
1) Establish a more detailed and relevant patient ‘end of bed’ information board.
At the moment, there are wide variations between wards in what information these display. From a visual perspective, this is not always clear or up to date.
The project aims to create a more universal bed sign, using a single format ensuring all relevant and appropriate information is easy to read and readily available. This will ensure we enable independence and identity for our patient groups consistently across our wards.
2) Improve the day rooms, their current presentation and their use.
A recent ‘out of bed and dressed’ audit carried out across four of our wards (Poplar, Plane, Beech and Avocet) indicated there is minimal to no use of our day rooms. The selection of pictures below convey that the day rooms are poorly set up, not for functional use and evidence an uninviting environment. This is inhibited further by the use of storing equipment in day rooms, which should be stored in a more appropriate place making them not fit for purpose or accessible to patients and families.
3) Further support better utilisation of the day room, through the use of volunteers to support the establishment of regular activities for patients.
We would like to create a space that is patient friendly, inviting and promotes social interaction and a safe space in which patients can interact with friends, family, staff and volunteers through social means and activities.
We hope to increase our working with volunteers on the wards. The existing relationship with Harlow College through the T-level health students work experience piece has the potential to offer up opportunities for volunteers.
Initial conversations have taken place with the college to engage design students in the creation of a logo and design/artwork for the day rooms. A brief for each day room
