Story
On March 27th, earlier this year, we lost the most amazing woman in the world, my Mummy, Helen Lovatt. She was the most kind, vivacious and hilarious person, and my biggest support. Her little-known condition, CBD/PSP, has no treatments or cure, and we watched and cared as this stole her independence, character and life at the much too young age of 65.
My wonderful Dad cared for her every moment of the way, with help from me, my sister Sarah and all of my Mum's amazing friends who were invaluable in her final months. I won't say Mum was lucky to have us all there; it wasn't luck, we all showed up for her, knowing it was what she would have done for us.
Even with all this support, we could not have done it without the incredible team from Sue Ryder. They were there with us at the end to make sure that Mum was able to have her last wish of passing at home with all of her children there.
Sue Ryder is here to make sure everyone approaching the end of their life or living with grief can access the support they need. There is no one size fits all when it comes to how we cope and the help we need, but they are there when it matters.
So in September I'll be lacing up my trainers and plodding 21km in memory of the woman who once walked this half in my place when I was struggling and couldn't. I'll run it for her, counting down the minutes, remembering her smile and every time she told me, 'It will all be alright in the end, and if it's not alright, it's not the end'.
I'll be running it for Sue Ryder so they can continue offering their support to others like us. My target is pretty big, but Mum was never one for thinking small!
