I’m taking part in Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Thames Valley 2026 on 24 October 2026, walking under the stars as part of a team, the "Micklewhite Marchers", to help make sure more people get the expert care and support they deserve at the end of life. Together, we’ll be walking 10k in heartfelt appreciation for the care and kindness my family received from our local Sue Ryder hospice, The Duchess of Kent' in Reading. It tells you everything you need to know about John that their will be over 50 people in our team.

My husband was looked after at The Duchess of Kent Hospice during the last two weeks of his life, and I will always be deeply grateful for the compassion shown to us. At a time when I felt exhausted and uncertain, a member of staff visited us and helped guide us towards the support that was best for John. The hospice provided comfort, dignity and a peaceful place to be, also allowing for laughter with our visitors which John needed, while also allowing me to spend precious time with him and care for our children. From the moment he arrived until after he died, we were supported by nurses, volunteers and counsellors, with thoughtful check-in calls that meant so much to me.

We were fortunate to have a place in our local hospice, but many others are not so lucky, as government funding only covers a small part of the care they provide. That is why I’m fundraising for Sue Ryder Starlight Thames Valley 2026, to help ensure others can receive the same expert care and support at such an important time. My target is £100, and every donation will help make a real difference.
