Pedalling for a Purpose - Local Nurse and GP Take on 130km Charity Ride to Support Homeless Healthcare

On Saturday 5th July 2025 two dedicated healthcare professionals will swap their scrubs for saddles as they embark on a 130km charity cycle to raise vital funds for people experiencing homelessness.

Nurse Louise Scantlebury and Dr Nigel Moody will cycle from The Freedom Centre in Barnstaple to Exeter’s Clock Tower Surgery – and back again – covering 130km and climbing over 2,000 metres along the way!

In 2024, Louise and Nigel joined the team at Clock Tower Surgery in Exeter to help establish a practice delivering primary care services to people experiencing homelessness in both Barnstaple and Exeter – focusing on compassionate, accessible care for people sleeping rough, and helping reduce the impact of long-term conditions on their daily lives.

The average life expectancy for someone sleeping rough is just 45 years. By improving access to essential care and diagnostic tools, Louise and Nigel hope to help change that – one mile at a time.

Christiaan, a service user at The Freedom Centre, shared:

“Having a nurse and GP that have empathy, care, and understanding at the time of need is incredible. Having access to healthcare is unbelievable.” – May 2025

The mission:

To raise £2,800 for a desktop spirometer and software to help diagnose and treat respiratory conditions like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and asthma from their clinic at The Freedom Centre.

How to Support the Ride:

Help us reach our £2,800 goal for a desktop spirometer and software to better diagnose and manage respiratory conditions at The Freedom Centre.
