Running 50km to Empower Women in Sierra Leone (POWER Project)

luc-antoine bonte is raising money for APT Action on Poverty

Celtic Trail Races – 50k Ultra · 13 December 2025

Action on Poverty builds livelihoods for vulnerable people. We deliver programmes with partners in East and West Africa which provide practical support to those living in extreme poverty, break down social barriers for marginalised groups and enable people to transform their communities.

Story

On 13th December, I’ll be running 50km (yes, fifty!) to raise funds for a project close to my heart — supporting women in rural Sierra Leone to lead change in their communities.

Why this matters

In rural Sierra Leone, a broken water pump isn’t just an inconvenience — it means:

- girls miss school,

- women lose time they could be earning,

- and families face sickness from unsafe water.

And because women often have little say in community decisions, they carry the heaviest burdens with the least power to change things. Add the isolation of rural life — and real opportunity can feel out of reach.

With the right support, women can keep the water flowing, earn their own income, and shape a stronger future — this is the vision of POWER

The POWER Project

"Promoting Opportunities for Women’s Empowerment & Resilience" flips the script: women aren’t waiting for change— they ARE the change.

They’re learning to fix broken pumps and build toilets, taking on roles once reserved only for men. They’re organising digital payment systems so families can chip in a little each month, keeping water flowing long after the project ends. They’re creating new markets, connecting with each other, and breaking the isolation of rural life.

And as they gain skills, they gain something even more powerful: confidence and leadership. POWER is about women challenging old norms, changing behaviours, and transforming daily life in their communities.

In just one year, POWER will reach 4,000 people in 4 villages — bringing clean water, building resilience, and lasting change.

Why I’m running

Running 50 kilometres will be tough — but it’s nothing compared to what many women in Sierra Leone face every single day. To fetch water, they may walk 5 km daily. Over a year, that adds up to more than 1,800 km — the distance from London to Rome.

50 km to spotlight their daily walk for water — and turn steps into opportunity.

How you can help

Every donation will directly support the POWER project and the women leading change in their communities:

• £10 --> Business training for a young woman.

• £25 --> A day of field travel for staff, reaching remote villages.

• £50 --> An starter kit for 4 young women to begin soap-making or pump repair.

• £100 --> Trains 20 women in climate-smart farming.

• £250 --> set up a mobile money system to maintain water pump

Together, we can turn miles into meaningful change.

Thank you so much for your support 💜
