Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page!
Lucy & Helen here and we’re raising money for Dementia UK in honour of our loved ones to continue the fight against this devastating disease. Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family, working towards a day where no one has to face dementia alone. Their specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing advice and support, to anyone affected by dementia, whenever it is needed.
On 24th May we will be setting off to London to complete the London to Brighton Ultra Challenge walk. A total of 100 Km (just over 62 MILES) which is an enormous task in itself, but to make this even more of a challenge we have committed to walking continuously through the night to reach Brighton in an ambitious time of sub 24 hours! This is a mammoth challenge that will push us mentally and physically as we walk through the night until morning.
We haven't had much time to prepare, but this was an opportunity we simply couldn't pass up, as it allows us to raise crucial funds for a charity that means a lot to both of us.
I’m Lucy and I’ll be walking in memory of my Grandad John, Grandad Lyndon, my Great Uncle Michael (a honouree Grandad) and for wider family members who lived with Dementia. The 24th May also marks the day that would have been my Great Uncle Michael’s birthday and will the first year marking this day without him, so it only felt right to take part. For those who have seen a loved one live with dementia or living with the condition, dementia isn’t just memory loss in forgetting when you last boiled the kettle, or had your dinner. The painful reality of Dementia is losing the person you love while still having conversations with them weekly. Dementia is looking at pictures and not knowing who someone is or getting angry at them not talking back to you, it’s going outside and not knowing if it’s day or night-time even when the stars are out. It is also seeing the impact of this change on family members as they support their loved ones through this. This is why I am fundraising for Dementia UK, where any contribution great or small will make a difference to a family somewhere.
I’m Helen and I’ll be walking in memory of my Grandma Edna who we lost to this cruel disease 9 years ago this coming August. She unfortunately suffered for many years and it was hard to watch as the disease took parts of her away, slowly seeing the person she once was fade away. Particularly with knowing what a strong minded and incredibly independent woman she was. When a loved one has dementia, it impacts the entire family, but it took an especially heavy toll on my father, as her only child. Dementia is not just about memory loss—it affects many aspects of daily life, and caring for someone with this condition requires patience, compassion, and resources. In her memory, I’d would like to give back and help support those who are currently living with dementia, as well as the families and caregivers who are facing the same challenges we did.
If you can, please consider donating. Your generosity will help create a future where fewer families experience the pain we and many other have gone through and where more people can receive the support they deserve.
Thank you & lets raise some money for a great cause (and we best start training!!!)
