Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a complex life-threatening heterogenous disease, in my Grandma's case, inherited by genetic factors; a disease that devastatingly took the lives of Janet's father, 3 brothers and nephew. Since being diagnosed in her early 20's, Janet has spent months in hospital at a time, where treatment that kept her alive resulted in steroid psychosis while her body fought the cruel disease. Speaking on behalf of myself and my mum, we will forever be inspired by the determination, selflessness, positivity and courage Janet has always and continues to show.
Our relationship with the Norfolk and Norwich Renal Unit began on 18th November 2013 when Janet was first put on hemodialysis, where she was cared for and supported by the wonderful team for the following 5 years. Three times a week, Janet would spend the day at the Renal Unit where she built life-long friendships with both the patients and nurses. Ron has supported Janet throughout everything and even learned how to use the washing machine and cook!
On 25th April 2018, Janet received the most generous gift imaginable, a kidney, the transplant that has changed her life beyond belief.
For Ron's 80th, he wishes not to receive anything for himself but to donate by way of saying thanks to the Norfolk Renal Team that saved Janet's life. Turning 80 is a milestone Ron is refusing to see as a barrier, instead an exciting opportunity to raise money. Ron has run a remarkable 18 marathons including London, Barbados, New York, Athens and Amsterdam. These next 80 days will mark the final physical challenges to sum up such a vast athletic career.
On behalf of Ron, Janet, Sam and I, we would like to say thank-you to anyone able to support us in raising as much money as possible for the Norfolk Renal Fund Charity. Good luck Ron.
