Story
On the 14th August 2020 I was involved in a mountaineering accident on the Isle of Skye where I sustained traumatic injuries that led to a 7 week hospital admission followed by a recovery at home and a subsequent phased return to work as a medical doctor.
I was alone in the mountains that day and a nearby climber made the call to the Skye Mountain rescue team due to his concerns of suspicious nearby rockfall he had heard.
Around 15 individuals from the Skye MRT began to carry out the search for a potential casualty .They looked for over 4 hours in response to the call from the nearby climber, despite there never actually being any confirmed sighting or distress calls from a human reported in the climbers original phone call.
The Skye MRT eventually found me after a prolonged search in response to this phone call. I was found unconscious with an open fracture to my lower leg. They subsequently provided the urgent treatment before flying me to the Aberdeen royal infirmary hospital, where my long hospital journey began.
I owe my life to the Skye Mountain rescue team. I am extremely fortunate to have been found and extricated from the mountains that day.
There are many Mountain rescue teams around the country full of teams of extraordinary individuals who go above and beyond to assist people when things don't go the plan in mountains. And they do all of this along side their everyday jobs and for no charge, relying on charity to function.
To show my appreciation for the Skye Mountain rescue team I will walk the Welsh 3000's accompanied by my son (Aelan) on my back. Whether Aelan will join me for the whole route will be weather dependent. He will also be sitting out the most exposed sections of the route (Crib Goch). I will be doing it over 3 days with support from friends and family.
Any donations you can make would be much appreciated and will go to help the Skye MRT continue to do what they do best in the mountains!
Thanks in advance!
