Story
Why we chose Pancreatic Cancer UK
In 2024, our beloved Hazelveare Matron, Ceci Elliot, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
For nearly 40 years at Lord Wandsworth College, Ceci has been a constant source of warmth, kindness and unwavering support. Her smile has changed the hearts of generations of students, and her presence has shaped Hazelveare into more than just a boarding house it’s been a home.
As the 2025/26 Devizes to Westminster squad, we have chosen to paddle this year’s race for Ceci. The Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race is one of the toughest endurance challenges in the country at 125 miles of relentless paddling. But it is nothing compared to the battle faced by those living with cancer.
We are taking on this challenge not only for Ceci, but for everyone who has been affected by cancer. She has given so much to the boys of Hazelveare over the years, and this is our way of giving even a fraction of that back.
Every donation, no matter the size, will help support the fight against pancreatic cancer and bring hope to families facing this devastating disease.
Pancreatic Cancer UK
Pancreatic Cancer UK is a charity that supports people affected by pancreatic cancer and works to improve survival rates. The organisation funds scientific research to develop better ways to diagnose and treat the disease, campaigns for improved healthcare and funding, and raises awareness of pancreatic cancer symptoms. It also provides information, support services, and specialist nurses to help patients and their families cope with diagnosis and treatment.
The Facts
Pancreatic Cancer research is very much under-funded despite the fact that it is the 5th most common cause of cancer deaths in Europe and the USA. In the UK:
> over 7,600 people are diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer every year
> fewer than 20% survive more than one year
> less than 3% survive more than five years.
>1 in 4 people will lose their lives within a month of a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, and 1 in 2 won’t survive beyond three months.
Thank you for supporting us — and for supporting Ceci.
