Henry's fundraiser for PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide

Lyke Wake Walk · 6 July 2024
The Lyke Wake Walk is a challenging 40 mile hike with 5000 ft elevation gain, if that wasn’t difficult enough, on top of that it needs to be completed in no longer than 24 hours. On the 6th July we intend to complete this challenge and raise as much money as possible for PAPYRUS. In this day and age no one should be dying from suicide, but unfortunately that isn’t the world we live in. In doing this we hope to be able to make a difference in at least someone’s life.
Henry's thoughts: Just over two years ago I lost my oldest friend Joe to suicide, in his memory I tackled the three peak challenge with the hope of being able to make a difference. Once again I would like to try and make a difference. Over the years dealing with Joe’s passing may have become easier but in no way does that make it any less sad, despite all the time that’s passed I still feel like a part of me is missing. While doing this challenge won’t bring that piece back, what I do hope is that I can help save someone and stop others from going through the same pain I’ve had to, a pain that no one should have to go through.
Jack's thoughts: I met Henry through a mutual friend of ours, Lucca, and after hearing about the fundraiser and the story behind it, I was more than happy to participate in this challenge and help make a difference. Whilst not losing someone to suicide personally, I understand that it can be one of the biggest killers in men and affects thousands of life's. Weight lifting being a great passion of mine and by pushing myself out of my comfort zone by delving into hiking and more physically demanding activities allows me to become a limit breaker and reach greater achievements that I didn't think would be possible, which hopefully can inspire others to do the same, no matter who they are. I hope to make a difference by helping to raise money for PAPYRUS so that young men never see suicide as an option and to show their life is meaningful in every way.
Kyle's thoughts: I first met Henry at the beginning of the year through Lucca and we have been friends since. This year, it has been my goal to get back into hiking and improve my overall fitness, and this challenge will certainly put that to the test. By participating in this challenge, I aim to raise awareness of the important issue of young suicide. Suicide should never be an option that anyone considers and I hope to help raise as much money as I can to support PAPYRUS.
Lucca's thoughts: I didn’t personally know Joe, but his story deeply touched me. Inspired by Henry’s dedication to honouring Joe’s memory, I felt compelled to join this hike across country. The aim is to support PAPYRUS, a charity working hard to reduce young adult suicide. Having known others who have tragically taken their own lives, I've seen the profound impact it has on their loved ones. If our journey can raise enough to prevent even one such loss, then it will have been wholly worthwhile.
Finnbar's thoughts: For many years, I've navigated the challenges of depression and anxiety. These personal struggles have deeply connected me to the importance of mental health awareness and the need for accessible support. By taking on the Lyke Wake Walk on July 6th, I aim to contribute, even in a small way, to helping those in need of support. Quite a few years ago, someone I knew lost their life to suicide, and the effects of this tragedy still resonate with me today. This event has not only shaped my understanding of the silent battles many face but also fuelled my desire to help prevent others from experiencing the same problems. Any support for this cause is greatly appreciated, as we strive to bring light and hope to those in need.
