Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hey everyone,

I've got something exciting to share! I'm gearing up to run the Tatton Park Half Marathon in November, but it's not just about crossing the finish line. I'm running to support Cure DM, a charity close to my heart that's all about helping families dealing with Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy.

Myotonia congenita is no walk in the park—it's an inherited neuromuscular disorder where muscles struggle to relax after a voluntary contraction. Imagine your muscles being slow to let go, especially after a sudden burst of activity. It's been a part of my life since childhood, and while the symptoms can vary, they're always present.

There are two forms of this disorder—Becker-type, which is more common, and Thomsen's disease, which is rarer but milder. It's caused by mutations in a gene responsible for controlling electrical excitation in the muscles.

But here's the thing: despite the stiffness, this condition doesn't cause muscle wasting. In fact, it can lead to muscle enlargement and strengthening. And while some people might need medication or therapy to manage symptoms, many, like myself, find relief through exercise and movement.

Now, I'm not exactly a runner (and I've got exercise-induced asthma to boot), but I'm determined to make this happen at 35! It's time to push myself and make a difference.

So, whether you know me as the person who never runs or the one with a killer sense of humor 😂, I'm asking for your support. Let's show some love to Cure DM and make a difference together!

Cheers,

Mark 🧡
