In February 2026, Intense Tropical Cyclone Gezani struck eastern Madagascar, causing catastrophic damage, particularly to the country's second-largest city and primary port, Toamasina (Tamatave). As of mid-March 2026, the humanitarian impact remains severe as the nation continues to assess the trail of destruction.

Displacement: More than 100,000 people were displaced, entire districts flooded, with many seeking refuge in temporary shelters.
Infrastructure: Approximately 75% of Toamasina's infrastructure was damaged or destroyed. Electricity is estimated to be out for weeks if not months. It's worse in the countryside
Housing: Over 25,000 homes were completely destroyed and nearly 50,000 were damaged.
Education: Around 1,000 classrooms were either destroyed or severely affected.
