This summer, I will be volunteering at Wioso Senior High School in rural Ghana for a week in June.

While I’m there, I’ll be supporting a project focused on making reusable sanitary towels with the students.

The school is a boarding school with over 420 students, more than half of whom are girls. Many are the first in their families to access secondary education. For some, managing their period safely and with dignity is still a challenge, and it can affect attendance, confidence and their ability to fully take part in school life.

This project is about something simple, but important. Working alongside students, we will be making reusable sanitary towels using locally available materials, and sharing practical knowledge around menstrual health and hygiene.

The aim is not just to provide products, but to build skills and confidence so that this can continue long after we leave. It also links closely to the school’s broader approach to sustainability, using reusable materials and reducing reliance on expensive or single-use products.

Alongside this, I’ll be spending time with students in lessons and around the school, supporting where needed and learning from them in return.

Wider health and wellbeing support within the school

This is a small, practical intervention, but one that can make a real difference to girls’ education and day-to-day lives.
