Story

About the team

For the past several years, a team of Magdalen students, Fellows, and staff have entered the Town & Gown 10K race, a non-competitive event taking place each year which is suitable for walking, jogging, or running.

In 2023 we extended participation to College alumni, securing Magdalen the trophy for largest college team! Here are some members of the 2023 team, pictured in College after the race.

About the fundraiser

The 2024 race will take place on Sunday 12 May, and we are aiming for an even greater turn-out this year! As additional motivation, the team will be raising funds for a local charity, Homeless Oxfordshire, in collaboration with the College's own charity, the Magdalen College Trust.

We have set an ambitious target of £5,000, corresponding to £500 for every km of the race course; the Trust will contribute £1 for every £10 raised by the team, up to a maximum of £1,000.

You can support the team by contributing to the fundraiser, for example by spreading the word among your family and friends, and by making a donation --- any amount, no matter how small, helps make a difference! For example, £12 can keep a resident warm and safe for a week in one of the facilities managed by Homeless Oxforshire; more examples are below.

If you prefer to make a donation in cash, you can do so in person through the College's Accounts Office (Longwall Quad, Bursary, ground floor) by Friday 17th May.

About Homeless Oxfordshire

Homeless Oxfordshire is the county’s largest not-for-profit supported accommodation provider for people experiencing homelessness and is an open door for people whose lives have been shaped by trauma, providing safety, stability, and support.

Each night they accommodate approximately 170 people, and through their hostel and community housing projects, they provide the person-centred support to help the most vulnerable in our society to recover from homelessness.

Here are concrete examples of how the funds raised can help make a difference:

- £12 keeps a resident warm and safe for a week;

- £25 provides one good meal a day for a week;

- £47 provides someone with new, clean bedding (including a bedsheet, duvet, duvet cover, pillow and pillowcase);

- £67 buys a kitchen set for a resident to enable independence in the community (including pans and cooking utensils, plates, cups, knives and fork);

- £75 provides three good meals a day for a week;

- £100 provides a trauma-informed counselling session.

Thank you so much for contributing to the team's fundraiser in support of Homeless Oxfordshire, and please consider sharing this page with your family and friends!
