Story
Hi! I’m Maia, the Business Development and Marketing Manager at WM Plant Hire (yes the one that normally talks about long reach and Spider excavators) who’s about to swap my cosy office chair for a bike seat that will undoubtedly become my nemesis.
In February 2026, I’m swapping my focus from our massive excavators to a bicycle that weighs approximately 1/1000th as much as I tackle the Safari Cycle “Peak to Plains” challenge: 350km over 5 days from Mount Kilimanjaro to the Ngorongoro Crater. My legs are already protesting the mere thought of it!
At WM Plant Hire, we tackle the UK's toughest engineering challenges—dredging wetlands, restoring lakes, protecting coastlines and generally moving mountains or concrete slabs up to 20 tonnes when needed. But apparently, I've decided that's not challenging enough, so I'm taking on actual mountains in Tanzania instead. Committed to making a lasting difference beyond hard hats and heavy machinery WM Plant Hire have sponsored me to take on this adventure!
Why put myself through this? Bridge2Aid’s incredible work resonates deeply with our values: while we create sustainable environmental solutions with giant machines, they build sustainable healthcare through something equally powerful—training. In Tanzania, where only 111 dentists serve 61 million people, each trained clinician is worth their weight in gold fillings.
This mission is especially close to my heart because it was inspired by two amazing people: my late father (pictured cycling by my side), who’s crazy adventures included scaling mountains at 69 and riding from Wolverhampton to Hove in a single day, and my partner Bop—a talented dentist who’s already volunteered on dental missions abroad and will be joining me pedal-to-pedal on this adventure.
Please donate! Your support will help train healthcare workers AND ensure I don't collapse dramatically on a Tanzanian roadside.
Together, we can make thousands smile again—literally!
