Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

Making Ellie Count was created in memory of a beautiful little girl who should of been celebrating her 10th birthday this year (2024)

In 2015 aged just 11 months, Ellie was unwell, she had a high temperature and was refusing food, after seeing doctors at the hospital, and being giving treatment for viral tonsillitis, Ellie was sent home.

Sadly, the following morning Ellie passed away, she had been misdiagnosed and had not received the treatment that could have saved her. Ellie died of Sepsis.

Kerry who is Ellie's mum, and also one of Caremark Thanet, Dover & Canterbury's directors, is determined to make Ellie's short life make a difference, which is why 'Making Ellie Count' was created.

Caremark said it is not just about raising money for the charity Sepsis, it’s about making people aware of the symptoms, and how easily they can be masked. They urged people that if you believe you or someone else has Sepsis, then make sure a test is done.
