We are a partnership between University College London and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre and have set up the first ever stroke unit in Malawi. As well as the unit, we are providing a complete stroke service including expert medical, nursing and therapy care from the point at which the patient enters the hospital, until after they are back at home. This is the first such service in that part of southern Africa, and we hope will serve as a model for the region.
Thorough assessment and simple interventions save lives and reduce disability. Early data showed that attending our stroke unit has reduced in-hospital stroke-related death by about 80%.
