2024 will bring about the 80th anniversary of the largest opposed amphibious operation in human history, otherwise known as Operation Overlord, or D-Day.
4,414 men lost their lives in the landings alone, and subsequently, 73,000 men lost their lives in the ensuing Battle for Normandy.
It is the absolute honour of the Paddle Group RMA, to be able to conduct this event in the memory of the men and women who planned, prepared, and successfully executed Operation Overlord, which turned the tide against the Nazi occupation of Europe.
To mark the 80th Anniversary of Operation Overlord, the Paddle Group will be departing the Royal Marines Yomper at Eastney, Portsmouth in 2-man Klepper folding kayaks on the 3rd June. The Paddle Group will conduct an English Chanel crossing of 90 nautical miles through the night, arriving in Port-en-Bessin on the 4th June 2024.
The Paddle Group will then be conducting a littoral paddle of all Allied opposed landing beach heads, beginning with the U.S sectors (Utah and Omaha) on the 5th June, culminating with the British and Canadian sectors (Gold, Juno and Sword) on the 6th June, D-Day.
To mark this special anniversary, the Paddle Group will be taking part in the re-enactment of the landings at Sword Beach with 47 Commando on D-Day.
The Paddle Group RMA is formed up of veteran and serving Commandos from across all three U.K. Services; the Royal Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force.
