Story
We're fundraising for the British Heart Foundation in memory of Helen's dad, Oli and Alice's grandad, Nick who sadly died last year. He was born with a heart condition but was able to live a full life as arguably the kindest and smiliest person in the world (or at least in Dorset!) thanks to amazing cardiac healthcare.
Dad had a pioneering operation in his 20s known as the Ross Procedure which was so successful it lasted far beyond expectation making him a medical marvel among heart specialists.
Excelling at whatever sport he turned his hand to, Dad represented his county in athletics as a teenager and played football, tennis and squash for many years, but cricket was his ultimate love and his Wednesday night fixtures remained an unmissable feature throughout his working life.
He loved being a dad and grandad even more than sport and we are so grateful for the time we had with him especially the period when he looked after Oli when Helen went back to work. Highlights on Grandad's watch include the day Oli ate a whole pot of houmous and when Grandad dived into a rose bush during footie training. It was the save of legends but Grandad was somewhat worse for wear after the prickly encounter. And all the grandchildren were delighted to discover that on Grandad's watch it was never too cold for ice cream or a trip to the park or beach.
In later years he underwent multiple procedures to keep his heart beating and received exceptional emergency care at the Royal Brompton when he suffered cardiac arrest after surgery.
The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives. It's only thanks to support from people like you that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps.
We were so lucky that Dad was able to benefit from cutting edge cardiac medicine as a young man and outstanding specialist knowledge in later life. We would like to help make this possible for others living with heart conditions now and in the future. Thank you so much for your support. It means everything to us - we don’t use the term ‘you’re a life-saver’ lightly!
